Yemeni and Saudi figures call for ban on child marriages - FYI

More than half of Yemeni girls are married under 15-years-old.

When 10-year-old Nujood and nine-year-old Arwa came forward and asked Yemeni courts to divorce them from their husbands, their stories sparked a media uproar and helped spur a movement to ban child marriages in the conservative, tribal-based Yemeni society. Although deeply rooted in traditional Yemeni society, child marriages have rarely received exposure. Marriage disputes are traditionally resolved privately, without court interference. A 2007 study by Sanaa University found that 52 percent of Yemeni girls under the age of 15 were married. Child marriages also exist in Saudi Arabia where no marriage law specifies the legal minimum age. Although a woman's consent is legally required, many marriage officials do not seek it. Although there are no official statistics on the number of child marriages in Saudi Arabia, critics believe the practice is widespread, and are asking the Saudi government to pass legislation setting a minimum age for marriage. Saudi Arabia’s top religious authority, Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Asheikh has warned families against imposing their will for marriage upon their children. “Islam has stipulated that both parties agree to the marriage contract,” he was quoted by AP as saying. “The woman must express real consent to the suitor, and a guardian must not impose his choice of husband on her.”

Georgia congressman warns of Obama dictatorship – what next?

WASHINGTON (AP) — A Republican congressman from Georgia said Monday he fears that President-elect Obama will establish a Gestapo-like security force to impose a Marxist or fascist dictatorship. "It may sound a bit crazy and off base, but the thing is, he's the one who proposed this national security force," Rep. Paul Broun said of Obama in an interview Monday with The Associated Press. There's no threat to be warning and fear-mongering about, they need to stop such nonsense. The majority of Americans were more realistic and mature in their conduct. I wonder what this congressman is smoking. Papa Chuck

Bizarre Question - Is it possible to turn into a werewolf?

$64 QUESTION: I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts as to whether or not it’s actually possible to turn into a werewolf. I know it's pretty far fetched but hey who knows. I'm afraid this is highly unlikely to be possible. You'd have to consider the fact that Humans and Canines are two totally different species. So if this was possible which it is not, you'd have a very odd Human being, which would probably be lost in both the realm of humanity and the canine world. However on the other hand, I once had girlfriend once who stopped shaving for a week before she got her period. Trust me, people can turn into werewolves. LOL! Papa Chuck

Obama to target Bush executive orders

Obama to target Bush executive orders
President Elect Barack Obama wants to find ways to make his mark quickly in the opening days of his presidency and reverse the legacy of President George W. Bush.  Obama will focus his efforts on the list of executive orders that shaped White House policy, reversing them quickly.  That does not require legislative approval, but it could bring the most contentious issues to the forefront immediately and create more polarization than post-partisanship.

Scraping off the bumper sticker

There is a lot that goes into deciding when to scrape off a bumper sticker. Not only do you need time and the right tools, but there is a psychological aspect. You are finally admitting defeat, or deciding that you do not want "credit" for the last victory. Papa Chuck

Russia to move missiles to Baltic

So Russia has now decided to fight fire with fire. It will be interesting to see the US reaction to this news, as Russia continues to play the US game of brinkmanship; Russia will defend its territory against what they see as a direct threat from the US. The US has been using apprehension tactics in Europe by trying to say that Iranian missiles could reach there and that the missile defenses are a protective measure - something that no anyone with half a brain would ever believe.  American is all about pressure - Russia does a LOT of business with Iran, and that country seems to be the next one on the agenda in the battle for control of resources. It is no longer a secret that US ABM installations in Eastern Europe are meant against Russia. They may mean little now given Russia's arsenal, but in the long-term I am sure will enhance the ABM's capabilities and increase its numbers. The ABM is meant to neutralize Russia's ballistic missiles - and as such it is termed as being "defensive". Alright then - Russian Iskander missiles in the Baltic enclave Kaliningrad are meant to neutralize the ABM capabilities - thus they can be termed as "defensive" or at least "counter-defensive". Whoever is surprised or appalled by this move – its time to wake up. I think the US is playing a dangerous game - you can't rattle sabers in the backyard of Russia and not expect a reaction. This is a worrying escalation of events, but one that was always going to happen in what is fast becoming a game of VERY high stakes. Papa Chuck

Mayon Pinatubo, Zambales

Mount Pinatubo by ronaldibay.

Mount Pinatubo is one of a chain of composite volcanoes that constitute the Luzon volcanic curve. The curve parallels the west coast of Luzon and mirrors eastward-dipping subduction along the Manila channel to the west. Mount Pinatubo is among the highest peaks in west-central Luzon. Its former summit, at 1,745 meters height, may have been the crest of a lava dome that formed about 500 years ago during the most recent previous major eruptive episode. The volcano's lower flanks, intricately dissected and densely covered in tropical vegetation prior to the 1991 eruptions, were composed largely of pyroclastic (Made up of or containing rock fragments or ash from a volcanic eruption) deposits from voluminous, explosive prehistoric eruptions.

The GOP is scratching its head right now, in the wake of this election

Empires always collapse... They come and then go. Throughout history, time after time, these great civilizations implode upon themselves. We are the modern Romans. We need to return to the vision of this country that guided our founders. If we do not, we are in for a long and bumpy road ahead. Why?  Because the Congress and President failed to do their job of upholding the Republic and the Constitution; which can lead to Socialism which in turn can easily lead to Fascism, and if that ever happens God help us! Individuals, who call themselves conservative, yet they praised the agenda of the past eight years. I hope with new leadership in the White House that in next four years that we can really get this great country back on track. Papa Chuck
